Winnebago was one of the earliest house trailer manufacturers to turn to
so-called "motor homes", the self-propelled version of the house trailer
that enjoyed a phenomenal success in the U.S. during the 1960s. With the
drop in demand for these vehicles, Winnebago and others modified their motor
home design into a small bus, in this case based on a 159-inch-wheelbase
Dodge chassis (RM-350 with a 318-cubic-inch six or RM-400 with a
440cubic-inch V-8). The total number of vehicles of this type, of all
makes, sold in the U.S. to the end of 1975 has been small, and most of them
are used for specialized transportation rather than common-carrier service.
