Sutphen were well-known builders of fire equipment on other chassis
before they began making their own chassis in 1967. Their aerial tower with
telescopic lattice-type aluminum boom appeared in 1963, and hundreds have
been made since then. Their custom chassis was a 3-axle job with Cincinnati
cab and a choice of diesel engines, mainly Detroits, from 265 to 525 hp, and
carried the Sutphen Aerial Tower. These have also been built on commercial
chassis, as have pumpers. In 1972 Sutphen built an experimental
turbine-powered 2,000 gpm pumper using a Ford 3600 gas turbine. Production
of custom chassis and equipment on commercial chassis continues today.
