Known professional car builders during the 1880s-1930s
First known date is 1890. Sowney Bros, awarded a contract to Philadelphia
architect Frank Miles Day to design and construct a new 3-story factory and
showroom at 747 S. 04th St. "work will commence at once" - Philadelphia Real
Estate Record and Builders' Guide, v. 5, n. 35, p. 530 (9/3/1890)
by 1898 Sowney Bros. Factory & Warerooms were at a different location at the
corner of Frankford and Girard Avenues. (1 block from the current I-95)

More than one Philadelphia historical record indicates that the firm was
called Lowney Bros. instead of Sowney Bros.
I know there was a late 1890s early 1900s San Francisco carriage maker
called Lowney Bros. who had their Carriage Factory at 426—9th St. San
Francisco, California
