RED BALL (US) 1924-1927
Red Ball Motor Truck Corp., Frankfurt, Ind.
The Red Ball was a captive make built by a large transport operator, the
Red Ball Transit Co. of Indianapolis. Early units were straightforward
assembled jobs created from stock components. Then in 1926 there appeared an
ingenious and complex 6-wheeler with dropframe chassis. This featured the
firm's own bogie consisting of no fewer than eight leaf springs in a complex
configuration. The tandem was single drive, the rear axle being an idler. A
Wisconsin engine was used, and the chassis was intended for passenger work
as well as a low-loading van. A few were sold to companies affiliated to
Red Ball Transit, but the firm soon withdrew from truck making to
concentrate on light-alloy van and trailer bodies which were made for some
years.
