Included in the seven that were
given incentives was the infamous North American Transit, Inc. This company
was given a $500,000 loan guarantee from College Station, but Bryan refused
to provide any loan guarantees. In exchange for the loan guarantee, North
American Transit agreed to move its manufacturing plant from Bryan to
College Station by early this year. It hasn't to date and, in fact, recently
laid off all of its 54 workers excluding president Wayne Cook and a security
staff when its one customer, the Brazos Transit System, claimed to have
found fleet defects in the steering and suspension systems of the buses and
refused to make future payments until the problems are corrected.
