The current wave of interest in small buses for shuttle lines and special
services in major U.S. cities dates from the early 1960's, and the first
builder to take advantage of it was Passenger Truck Equipment Co., which
previously built various types of sightseeing vehicles for zoos and parks.
The first well-known fleet of Minibuses was placed in service on a shoppers'
shuttle route in downtown Washington. Dodge or Chrysler V-8 engines are
used, and both propane and natural gas fuel option have been made available
in recent years. Although most Minibuses look like scaled-down versions of
regular buses, some have been built with bizarre body styling for special
purposes.
