At 216 E. State Street the Media Carriage Works began building The
Media Automobile, an electric vehicle.
Founded in 1895, the Media Carriage Works occupied a four story building at
State and Radnor Streets which is currently an office building and parking
garage. Initially employing 10 men, by 1900 they had prospered and grown to
30 workers employing modern machinery powered by an Otto gas engine.
On the first floor were a blacksmith and machine shop, offices and showroom
on the second, trimming and painting on the third, and finishing on the
fourth. Light carriages of all descriptions were manufactured including the
ice wagon pictured above. Recognizing the trend toward the horseless wagon,
the carriage works produced the Media Automobile in 1900 shown above.
Company officers were W. W. Johnson, Pres.; H.J. Hipple, Secy.; and E. L.
Cunningham, V.P. and Supt. If more information is known about this
enterprise, DCHS would welcome knowing about it.
Known automobile body builders in 1912 according to Suman-Hremblay.
